Modern Classic - Steve Harper Interview

In late 2015 Keith Adams of Modern Classic interviewed Steve Harper in his Studio about this past...

'Fields of the Nephilim' concept 1989.03

Having been an owner of a 1964 BJ8 Austin Healey, the spirit of that car remains in your blood.

The 2 sketches created in 1986/9 were christened ‘Laguna Seca’, after the famous raceway, where the likes of a modern ‘Healey concept’ would feel well at home.

The sketch ‘fields of the nephilim’, which was named after a gothic rock band of the time, was a new form of sports car, where the central driving position, was flanked by 2 outriggers for the passengers. This was a development of a concept penned in 1984, originally proposed for the BMW Museum.

In 1991, Ron Saunders, who was at the time the chief designer at MGA Developments had an original Lotus 7, which he wished to rebuild with a modern bodywork. ‘Rocket Ron’ luckily kept his original car intact, and the sketch idea remained just that.

The Ford Capri concept was produced for an article for the Autocar magazine, in 2002, who contacted several leading designers to envisage how a new Capri could look, if Ford was to resurrect the model. The sketch itself was somewhat crude, as it was produced, while on holiday, with the limited pens, etc available at the local village shop, in the jungles of northern Thailand.
