VANTAGE FTD design theme level 4 1990.06

Having created the Concept 90 full flight Simulator, the Vantage 500 Fixed Training Device was the next Rediffusion Simulation product for development in May 90.

Starting from a desktop, a flight crew can be taught in different stages, to master or refresh their knowledge of the wide variety of Commercial aircraft.

The Flight Training Device (FTD) is the fifth of 7 levels of crew training devices, where the 7th and final level would be spent on the full motion machines, such as Concept 90.

The level 5 device (hence ‘500’), developed from these initial sketches, shows how the crew and their instructors, sit in a generic cockpit environment and can be observed as they master many of the flight systems and navigation procedures.

The sketches were developed into a full size tape drawing, around the packaging requirements of the cockpit and ergonomic layouts for the crew and the training instructor.

The design created for the first time the opportunity to further develop the instructor’s working ergonomics, as first seen on the Concept 90. However here the design allowed for a fully adjustable touch screen console, by means of an articulated arm, suspended from the rear hoop structure. This also served as a means of eliminating glare from the surroundings.

The clay model of the forward sections, which enveloped the cockpit area, plus that of the hoop and base panelling were developed during the June of 1990, and were prototyped and built as a fully function device, on site at the Farnborough Air Show in September 1990.
