TX1 Taxi Cab Design

During 1992/93 under the direction of London Taxis International, a sketch programme, followed by a series of full size clay models, updated and redeveloped the traditional London black cab.

The goal was to improve the vehicles build quality, driver ergonomics and disabled passenger access.

From the onset of the project it was clear that the design should be an evolution from the classic shape. The LTI management tried to save costs by carrying over ‘off the shelf’ front and rear lamp units, which constantly were proven to reduce the overall design harmony.

Eventually, referring back to the original sketches, the round headlamps and teardrop taillamps were reintroduced, and this contributed to the final design of the TX1 cab.
